A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Stocks bounced back over the next two days, helped by a softer retail sales report , only to slump again on Friday's hot producer price index for January. As we said this week, we're not overly concerned with the hotter-than-expected inflationary readings. Earnings season picks back up for the Club next week, with four holdings set to report quarterly results. Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 23, 2023. But relief in Treasuries, the villain of the piece for several weeks, is probably the most significant marker for the remainder of the year. And there were further soothing noises for world bonds, even if not for global growth, from surprisingly weak Chinese business surveys for October. Overall, the picture pointed to another positive day for Wall Street stocks, with futures marginally positive ahead of the open as the Fed meeting gets underway. July 26 (Reuters) - Allegion (ALLE.N) raised its annual profit forecast on Wednesday after price increases and solid demand for its electric security devices helped it beat quarterly earnings estimates. "We expect end markets will be stable with continued strong demand for our electronic solutions," CEO John Stone said. Still, the weakness in the residential business prompted the company to lower the top end of its full-year revenue forecast. It now expects full-year organic revenue growth of 5.5% to 6.5%, compared with a prior forecast range of 5.5% to 7.5%. That compared with analysts' estimates for revenue of $934.7 million on profit of $1.71, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Unlucky for some perhaps, but a 13th today would make it the longest winning streak for the Dow since 1987. Meta Platforms (META.O) is up next after Wednesday's closing bell and its share rose 2%. Wells Fargo (WFC.N), meantime, climbed 2.8% after the bank's board authorized a new $30 billion share buyback program. The Fed decision comes in the wake of another set of forecast-beating U.S. consumer confidence readings for July. Elsewhere, the European earnings season was in full swing too, with banks dominating the diary and the European Central Bank meeting tomorrow.

Alphabet (GOOGL.O) also gained 1% as it too trumpeted gains in cloud services and AI, alongside plans for a $70 billion buyback. With Meta (META.O) results out later, its stock was up 2% and Amazon (AMZN.O) raced ahead 4%. PacWest Bancorp's (PACW.O) shares jumped 15% in extended trading after the regional lender said deposits have been building recently. And in Europe, Standard Chartered (STAN.L) shares bucked otherwise dour markets on a forecast-beating 21% jump in first-quarter profits. U.S. Treasury markets continued to rally, with yields on 2-year notes dropping below 4% Tuesday and testing 3.9% early today.

And so a speech from New York Fed chief John Williams make give a better steer on current thinking. Markets are now priced for a Fed 'terminal rate' in the 5.25-5.50% range by July and no cut from there by year-end. European central bankers are also talking tough as the region's economies dodge recession and inflation stays high. But geopolitical concerns rankle again ahead of Friday's anniversary, with Russia unilaterally withdrawing from a key nuclear arms control treaty. As G20 finance chiefs meet in India, the world is watching closely the extent of the alliance between Beijing and Moscow.

A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike Dolan. Meta added a deep pothole to an already bumpy U.S. earnings season - another obstacle to a market pumped-up by bets of some central bank relief on the horizon as G7 economies slow. read moreWith Apple (AAPL.O) and Amazon reporting later on Thursday, sentiment toward tech giants remains on edge. But after two-week, trough-to-peak bounce of almost 10%, global stock indices (.MIWD00000PUS) struggled to make much headway for the second session on Thursday.
